Greek Garden Exhibit
Now– November 14
If the names of Perseus and Hercules stir a sense of adventure and heroism in you, visit the Conservatory during our summer exhibit of ancient Greek culture and mythology. Although Greece has a tough and rocky landscape, the products of ancient Greek culture are lush and lively even today.
Fig and olive trees anchor the display, and silvery plants and herbs remind us of those natives that enjoy the alternating cool wet-hot dry climate of the region. Planted ruins demonstrate the persistence of Greek influence, in spite of changes wrought by time.
A large swath of blue flowers represents the sea, ever-present and influential to this entity that was composed of a peninsula, a coastline, colonies, and 1400 islands. And statuary reminds us that the names of Greek heroes, gods, and thinkers remain on our lips even now.
But this Mediterranean-themed garden is just a backdrop for the story of a people who worked and played, fought and feasted where the sea meets the land.
Visitors move past color-washed walls into smaller “garden rooms,” where they can read scrolls exploring what made this land-poor people culture-rich.
We are grateful for the generosity of Neuhouser Nursery and The Wood Shack for the loan of architectural elements and statuary.
Architectural salvage came from the old title building that stood where the Courthouse Green now lies.
Events occurring during this exhibit include the Botanical Roots concert series and Greek Family Event.
